3D Model

Using floor plan drawings created by architect and preservation activist Alan Burnham, preserved in the Alan Burnham Papers at Columbia University’s Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library (founded by Samuel P. Avery, one of the founding trustees of the Studio Building Association), the project team began creating a 3D model in 2023. Prior to demolition, Burnham had visited the Studio Building and taken measurements of the first floor, creating a chart that Annette Blaugrund reproduced in her publications. Through the project’s research, a cache of unpublished floor plan sketches of the Studio Building’s other floors and its Annex from the 1920s was discovered. The project is currently in the process of creating a 3D model, that can be annotated with tenant names. This model will enable spatial analysis of the physical proximity of tenants to one another within the building in any given year and over time.
